HUIPIL was José Mendonça's first professional project after he finished his BA in fashion at CITEM - Lisbon, in the path of Macedonia Pereira.

This was a project in a full circle of his own factory production, design and commercialization.

The brand HUIPIL started with a knitwear and handcraft -Tricot line, moving soon into the creation of an apparel womenswear & menswear lines as well accessories - bags & shoes .

For the spring.summer 85 collection José Mendonça embedded elastic yarns into the knitting process, to achieve the lycra look in the 80's fashion. Some of the pieces were turned into swimwear tricot lines. He also took a very exprimental approach in the autumn.winter 85.86 by padding knitwear garments using foam and microfiber fillings.

HUIPIL by José Mendonça collections, were characterized by their simplicity, functionality and charm inspired by monastic atmospheres and minimalist aesthetics.
